David’s Viburnum

I was a little surprised to discover that this viburnum was called Davidii or David’s Viburnum, especially as it is native to China. I cannot ascertain who this David was or is, though of the Judean king we can find frequent reference, even in the scriptures written centuries after he died. For example, he appears in Revelation chapter 5 in which ‘the Lamb that was slain’ is described as the 'Root of David'.

David of Bethlehem may not be the source of the flower’s name, but he is closely connected to the promised Messiah whose DNA he would in part provide. Only Jesus Christ could be the root and offspring of David, both His Maker and His son. And a sweeter flower He is, too.

I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. Revelation 22:16

His cheeks are as a bed of spices, as sweet flowers: his lips like lilies, dropping sweet smelling myrrh. Song of Solomon 5:13
