Dearer than Rubies

Some of the biggest and rarest rubies in the world are displayed at London’s Natural History Museum. These ones are ‘pigeon-blood,’ the most sought-after colour. Along with their clarity and carat weight, they are especially valuable as they remain uncut; any number of smaller rubies might be produced from these larger gems.

Job, in chapter 28, asks

But where can wisdom be found. And where is the place of understanding? Man does not know its value.

He goes on to explain that wisdom is dearer than rubies, for it is rarer even that these precious stones:

No mention shall be made of coral or quartz, For the price of wisdom is above rubies.

Wisdom, for the Christian, is more than spiritual enlightenment, philosophical debate or even knowing why tomatoes don’t go on fruit salads. It’s a person. Paul tells the Corinthians:

Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.

Christ is rarer, more beautiful and costly than any deep red stone found in the bowels of the earth.
