Family Tree, Family Grave, Family Nonsense
In a graveyard in southern Scotland is one of the most peculiar memorials I have ever seen, even apart from its large size, occupying a plot enough for 3-4 regular stones. It has upon it a family tree, presumably belonging to the corpses who lie beneath. Now regular readers will know that I am not averse to genealogy and family tree research, but is it really appropriate for one’s gravestone?
At the resurrection, when the graves are opened and all appear before the God of heaven, one’s forbears and ancestors will be utterly irrelevant and extraneous. The only issue is whether Christ’s atoning death covered your sins, or the gigantic bill is yet outstanding. Whoever’s child or grandchild you are will not be ascertained; only whether you are an adopted heir of Abraham and a child of God by faith will determine absolutely everything. Upon that status will all be gained, or all be lost.
