Franks Bridge

Frank’s Bridge in Kirkby Stephen is a narrow crossing of the River Eden, connecting the town to the hamlets of Hartley and Winton. It is thought the bridge was specifically constructed to allow the passage of coffins for burial in the churchyard, with some nearby stones used for resting them while their bearers caught breath. For four centuries, the living have crossed the river there, only to be carried back once death had claimed them.

We make plans as though we will be living this life forever. One day, you too shall be summoned to judgement while your spent body is placed in a coffin and transported to its resting place. Franks Bridge looms large for each one of us, yet few are prepared for death’s inevitable call. For the Christian, the Lord Jesus has Himself bridged death, allowing immediate entry to heaven. For the unbeliever, death, darkness and judgement are the only things to expect.

“I will ransom them from the power of the grave;
I will redeem them from death.
O Death, I will be your plagues!
O Grave, I will be your destruction!
Pity is hidden from My eyes.”

Hosea 13:14
