Hard as Old Nails

These two nails date from 1817 and were used to hold our roof in place. They are still rather sharp, and could be re-used for something, should the need be felt. When we had the roof repaired two years ago, these were brought down and kept as a sample. For two centuries they did their job, but now they are replaced with a new generation of fastener.

I wonder how many treasurers, secretaries, trustees, deacons, cleaners and cooks there have been at Salem Chapel since the time of King George III. The office of pastor is better documented, though those who served more discreetly will be better commended by the Lord. Yet all current office holders shall one day be removed, by circumstance, or age, or health. May we be found faithful in the days of our allocation and pray that God would raise up those to take the mantle and carry on the work. Those old nails look a little rusty, and not as pristine as that day they were sold by the Rimington blacksmith, but they fulfilled their function well enough and for as long as they were needed.

I salute them.

And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. Galatians 6:9, NKJV
