Hebron Hall Church

In the village of Backbarrow  which is not far from Ulverston in Cumbria, is a Brethren meeting hall by the name of Hebron Hall Church. Although a modern construction, it is part of that old nonconformist tradition of naming a Christian congregation after a Biblical town or city (like our Salem). I could not recall the significance of the place, so I looked it up and concluded that it was selected for the following reasons:

Hebron was a place of worship:

Then Abram removed his tent, and came and dwelt in the plain of Mamre, which is in Hebron, and built there an altar unto the Lord. Genesis 13:18

It was a place of departure and farewells:

And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre: the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan. Genesis 23:19

It was a place of new hope and fresh beginnings:

And Jacob came unto Isaac his father unto Mamre, unto the city of Arbah, which is Hebron, where Abraham and Isaac sojourned. Genesis 35:27

Hebron is a good name for a church!
