Papa Stour Kirk

Papa Stour Kirk has been redundant for some time but now offers a warm and generous welcome to any prepared to brave the rough seas and darken its doors. Several pews have been removed to make space for tables and chairs; what would have been a dingy vestry has been replaced by a modern, hi-spec toilet, kitchen and shop, while public Wi-Fi, information boards and supplies of tea and coffee entice visitors to tarry and relax.

I am the first to bemoan a Christian place of worship’s demise and de-consecration, but I also rejoice when such places retain their community spirit rather than just becoming second or third homes for the rich and restless. Papa’s kirk is more than just a secularised church or community hall; it has retained the pulpit, some pews and even provides Christian trinkets for a small donation. The Bible remains open for reading, and a rather evocative stained-glass depiction of the Lord Jesus calming the storm (what else?) surveys the room. Medieval abbeys and priories had an obligation to offer hospitality to pilgrims and travellers, a function not generally replicated by other churches or religious communities. Yet each individual Christian is called to be hospitable: to provide shelter, clothing, food and fellowship to those seek it and need it. Sermons and sung worship may no longer be heard, but that other function of the Church is now better fulfilled: blessing travellers. As the rains swept, the winds battered and the cold air crept into sleeves and openings, so the dry and friendly former kirk was the more welcome.

'Not all Christians are preachers', we routinely hear. Indeed, and not all can articulate theology, write books, combat heresy and analyse current events from a Biblical perspective. But we can all be kind, generous, considerate and welcoming.

May God bless Papa Stour, its people and its old and friendly kirk.

My righteousness is near; my salvation is gone forth, and mine arms shall judge the people; the isles shall wait upon me, and on mine arm shall they trust. Isaiah 51:5
