Sorbie Tower

Sobie Tower is an interesting old Wigtownshire castle, partly ruined, which bestrides both Scottish landscape and history. Many of these old forts are abandoned: bleak and grim, they were designed for defence, not comfort. As the times improved and lawlessness declined, landowners preferred to live in more spacious, civilised houses, not damp, grey towers with tiny windows and thick walls. The Hannay Clan sold it to the local earl in the seventeenth century, but there seems to be an active groundswell of support among modern Hannay descendants to have it restored and used again. I wish them well; seeing this tower restored to its former glory sounds like a great idea. Here is a group of people united by their heritage while looking forward to the future.

Likewise, we Christians can speak of past events, such as creation, Christ’s incarnation and atonement, as well as future events, by which we chiefly mean His return, the Judgement and the new heavens and earth. May we be a people who know what has been, as well as anticipating what shall be. May we know the past, but look forward to the even better things to come.

You shall eat the old harvest, and clear out the old because of the new. Leviticus 26:10, NKJV
