St Peter’s Church, Aubourn

St Peter’s Church at Aubourn in Lincolnshire was only constructed in the 1860s but a century later, a hole in the roof caused so much damage that the church was deemed beyond repair and most of it had to be demolished back in the seventies. I have seen many ruined, medieval churches, but for a Victorian one to be in such a state struck me as unusual. Some of it has survived, including the tower and the chancel, which were both locked. I could not decide if St Peter’s offered a salutary warning about a church’s potential to close and shrink, or a heartwarming reminder that even under intense pressure, the church of Jesus Christ continues even in her weakness.
