Todmorden Unitarian
The grandest church building in Todmorden is the Unitarian. Ultra-liberal deniers of the Trinity, the Cross and scripture (though praising its poetic and ethical value, etc), Unitarianism does not resemble the Christianity to which any Bible believers would adhere. Thoughtful, pious, welcoming and sincere, no doubt; faithful, saved and Spirit-filled, hardly. Yet see how its Victorian architect sought to make it resemble an Anglican parish church, which were more traditional and orthodox in their doctrine. Indeed, the Unitarians must have looked more Anglican entering their building than the real thing as they entered theirs, which is underwhelming.
Churches might look good, appear sound, resemble that which is true, yet they might propagate all manner of false doctrine, evil practices and unchristlike attitudes. The Bible is our rule of faith and benchmark against which we shall be judged. The beauty of the building and the eloquence of the preacher are irrelevant if God’s word is not held in the highest regard.
The building was completed in 1869, paid for by the three sons of John Fielden, a local industrialist, who was known as 'honest John'. I daresay that the great Judge of heaven will be honest with him when before Him he stands.
Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. John 17:17
