West Kennet Long Barrow

West Kennet Long Barrow in Wiltshire is an ancient tomb dating back nearly 6000 years, according to secular sources, though it must have been post-Flood to those of us who consider the Bible an accurate historical record. Despite its length of nearly 330 feet, making it one of the largest, as well as the oldest, of ancient British tombs, only fifty sets of remains have been found within. Perhaps these belonged to the families of the original builders, or were the royal family or nobles of an early Japhethite dynasty which moved to, and then claimed, southern England. Whoever they were, and from whatever it was that ended their lives, they were as bound to death and dying as were the poorer folks whose demise never warranted so grand a resting place. I sometimes marvel at how the rich and powerful construct great memorials for themselves, a last-ditch attempt to retain what they cannot keep.

We may think the ancient folk who built this long barrow to be primitive, but will not our fate be the same as theirs? Our bodies left underground, our spirits sent to hades to await the judgement we deserve?

We Christians have a Saviour who conquered the grave, who ripped it open that He and all who believe in Him might burst free and live forever. And those early tomb builders of Wiltshire? If they believed the promises of God given to Adam and Noah, then they, too, shall live with Christ in glory.

Lord, You brought my soul up from the grave; you have kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit. Psalm 30:3, NKJV
