Stockport's Lady and Edgeley's Apostles

The Church of Our Lady and the Apostles' Church at Edgeley in Stockport is a rather fine-looking Edwardian construction. A nice piece of gothic revival, it lacks the predictable bell tower but has an imposing gable with huge rose window, which admits much light to the affairs within. Somewhat bold is that red brick, and assertive; this Roman Catholic parish church seems to be very active, perhaps benefiting from Central European migration.

Sadly, we traditional Protestants are too well aware that the original Mary, the mother of the Lord, along with His apostles, would barely recognise today’s Romanism. Prayers for the dead, a priestly caste, wine becoming blood and the burning off of our sins in purgatory, are all features which first-century Christians would deny and reject. May God’s word, the Bible, shine a greater light into those pious hearts and lives than even the great, Edwardian rose window.

For the word of the Lord is right, And all His work is done in truth. Psalm 33:4
