No Roomfield

I went to visit church regulars in Todmorden this spring, which involved stepping off the bus in the town and walking a couple of miles into the hills. Enroute, I passed Roomfield Baptist Church, a rather modern little building set in a 'community garden'. A broken sign requested users enjoy and respect it, keeping it clear of rubbish. The rubbish swirled passed as I read it. To its credit, there is a website, which states:

Roomfield is a small Baptist church with a big welcome, only a few minutes walk from the town centre of Todmorden, down Halifax Road. We are an all inclusive welcoming church encompassing a wide age range. If you are looking for a congregation of people who enjoy a diversity of worship and service styles, who look at issues in an open and non-judgmental way, are committed to working in and with the local community and are housed in a multi-purpose, fully adapted modern building, then please do come and visit us. (emphasis mine)

Does anyone really claim to be looking for 'a diversity of worship and service styles'? Perhaps they do, though most people I know prefer one or the other. How about looking at issues in a non-judgemental way? Does that mean not forming opinions? Not endorsing or rejecting one thing or another? In truth, no, I am not looking for such a congregation of people. So I guess I won’t be visiting any time soon. Diversity, open-mindedness, non-judgmentalism and inclusivity are all the contemporary virtues of the day, and the liberal people of Todmorden will doubtless applaud this openness and flock to it each Sunday.

For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. 1 Corinthians 2:2
