Church of St Mary Bishophill Junior

Despite sounding like the name of a primary school, the Church of St Mary Bishophill Junior in the city of York has a most remarkable tower. It is constructed in stones from the Roman period, then it was heightened by the Anglo-Saxons and has fifteenth-century battlements. We therefore have a church with a direct link to the prophet Daniel’s 'fourth beast', the empire of Rome, which controlled ‘the world’ when the Saviour walked upon it.

We consider the Romans as figures from ancient history, but their legacy and influence remain even today. Daniel’s vision of “feet of iron and clay” is really just the current extension of old Rome, a continuation of its global domination and religious principles which will endure until the time of Christ’s return. The fourth great empire never fully died out, but the coming, cosmic Kingdom of Jesus Christ is already inaugurated, and its consummation and physical invasion is nigh.

And the kingdom, and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven shall be given to the holy people of the most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all powers shall serve and obey him. Daniel 7:27, Geneva Bible
