Brothertoft Church

The Church of St Gilbert of Sempringham at the Lincolnshire hamlet of Brothertoft is close by one of those wonderful A-roads for which the county is famous, and therefore easily accessed. Although it was all locked up, I briefly inspected the externals and took a picture or two through the window panes, espying little of note.

The grave of 28-year-old Henry Henstock is situated close by, a few lines of verse stating:

Affliction sore long time I bore,

Physicians (sic) skill was vain;

Till Christ the chief did send relief,

And eased me of my pain.

Not a healing, methinks, but a call home, a death. This is the ultimate healing, when God removes us altogether from the pain and angst of a fallen world, into his bright presence, where there is no darkness, curse or tribulation.

When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Mark 2:17
