Ardoch Roman Fort

On Monday morning I came up to Perthshire, calling at the site of the Ardoch Roman Fort near Braco. Although the place seems to have hosted two forts, which may account for there being five defensive ditches dug between its occupants and the outside world. Iron Age Scotland was a rough place, no doubt, and even Rome’s legions struggled to tame it. The excessive number of earthworks is surely testimony to the fear of the Damnonii tribesmen whose territory they were seeking to steal.
If Rome was the Prophet Daniel’s fourth and most terrifying empire, it met its match with those wild men from whom many Scots descend. All human empires, even ones about which prophets speak, have but a limited longevity and finite power. One day, a final, nasty world empire will come and be similar to Rome’s, but it will cover the whole earth. It, too, will shatter; it, too, shall vacate its strongholds and be replaced by sheep and jackdaws, for King Jesus will conquer it.
And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever. Revelation 11:15
