Wash and be Clean

When I lead evangelistic missions I like to interview people as to how they came to trust Christ (many of these can be seen on www.reallives.net). One of the most memorable was in a church in Pennsylvania. The interviewee had been a butler for aristocracy in the UK. He was headhunted by Bing Crosby but instead, became butler for the British Embassy in Washington One Saturday night, walking along Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, he heard singing, so crossed the road to see what was going on. He looked in to what was called a ‘Rescue Mission’. He was invited in and was shown a seat next to a very bedraggled, rather smelly addict. There were some hymns, but then a sermon on the words spoken to the Syrian army captain, Naaman, who was suffering from leprosy: ‘Wash and be clean’. That very night the butler trusted Christ as his Lord and Saviour and his life was changed. He worked for a while as a volunteer at the Mission. He eventually left his work as a butler, to work as Superintendent of that Rescue Mission. Jesus is able to save from the gutter-most to the uttermost!
