Lamb of God

I was recently walking through the Yorkshire village of Cracoe. A large number of lambs were in the field with their mothers keeping upon them a wary eye. We all know that lambs are quite cute and that they populate our farmland at this time of year. Seeing pictures of lambs in the field is therefore nothing especially unusual, nor worthy of note. Yet I was struck by how pathetic and weak they looked; cute, certainly, but delicate and defenceless also.

How bizarre that the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the dread sovereign of the cosmos, the One before whom even the mighty seraphim shield their faces, should be called the Lamb of God, who was slain from the foundation of the world. That our Jesus became a meek and defenceless sacrificial victim bespeaks so eloquently His amazing love for such sinful wretches as us.

And Abraham said, “My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering.” Genesis 22:8
