Crowning Wisdom: Hanover

To rid the land of the accursed Stuarts back in 1714, Parliament invited Georg Ludwig of Hanover to accede to the throne after the death of his cousin, Queen Ann. This ensured a Protestant monarchy at the expense of the Catholic Jacobites. He accepted the offer, naturally, and became King George I, while remaining Elector of Hanover. Hanover became a 'kingdom' in 1814 when it was restored to George III after Napoleon’s annexation. Thus the British Hanoverian kings were also kings of Hanover. This was the case until 1837 when Victoria took the British throne, but was prevented from taking the Hanoverian on account of the 'Salic law', which forbade inheritance through the female line. Therefore, the two kingdoms formally separated, and in 1843, fresh crown jewels were commissioned, a model of which is photographed above. The separation of the kingdoms of Great Britain & Ireland from that of Hanover was disastrous for the latter’s medium term future; it found itself gobbled up by the new German Empire of 1871, which was itself destroyed by the Great War in 1918. Had there been continued union between Hanover and the UK, its fate might have been different.

At the Fall of Adam, and especially after the Flood, we may detect the many and varied kingdoms and principalities of men splintering and separating, and each one of them, to varying degrees, in opposition to God’s Kingdom. Only the Jewish state under Kings David, Solomon, Asa, Jehoshaphat, Josiah, Uzziah, Jotham and Hezekiah came anywhere near communion with the Kingdom of Heaven, and that throne was terminated in the 580s BC. The day is coming, and has never been nearer, when the godless kingdoms of men shall be formally reunited to the Kingdom of God and the Crown of Christ:

Envoys will come out of Egypt;

Ethiopia will quickly stretch out her hands to God.

Sing to God, you kingdoms of the earth;

Oh, sing praises to the Lord, Selah

To Him who rides on the heaven of heavens, which were of old!

Indeed, He sends out His voice, a mighty voice.

Psalm 68:31-33

Then the seventh angel sounded: And there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever!”

Revelation 11:15, New King James Version

Hasten, Lord, the day!
